The Villages is a census-designated community in Sumter County where syphilis is the third-most reported STD, but infection rates are climbing faster than the top two STDs. The numbers of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases have fluctuated over the past several years but show a disturbing trend of steady diagnosis rates over the past decade.
Sumter County’s documented chlamydia cases have risen and fallen numerous times over the last 10 years. In 2019, cases were down nearly 13% compared to 2018, while 2018 numbers were more than 6% higher than 2017. Regardless, the rate of chlamydia infections is an ongoing concern to health officials. Chlamydia infections among women have typically doubled those in men and have been nearly three times higher in some years. The 20 to 24 age group had the highest incidence of infection, which was about 36.5% of all cases and equal to the percentage of cases among everyone aged 25 and older.
In 2019, gonorrhea cases in Sumter County were 40% lower than in 2018, with 2018 down by more than 11% compared to 2017. However, total gonorrhea cases in 2019 were higher than those reported in 2014, 2015, and 2013 showing a concerning trend. The ratio of male to female infections has been relatively close throughout the years, often trading places as the sex with the highest count. In 2019, male cases were about 18% higher than female cases, while female diagnoses outnumbered those in men by a single case the previous year.
Syphilis infections in all stages quadrupled over the last 10 years, including a jump of about 45% in 2019 compared to the previous year. Infections among men have outnumbered women for the past decade, except in 2012 when female cases took the lead by one. In recent years, the male/female ratio has been significantly skewed toward men, with males accounting for 93.75% of all cases in 2019, compared to a single documented female case that year. Reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis, the most infectious of all stages, were the same in 2019 as 2018. In both years, all primary and secondary diagnoses were among men.
Untreated STDs can cause long-term harm to your body, such as infertility, blindness, organ damage, increased cancer risk, and reduced life expectancy. If you’re sexually active, it’s vital to your overall health to get tested regularly, which is why resources in and around The Villages offer free or low-cost STD testing. The only way to know for sure if you’ve contracted an STD is through reliable screening.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
