At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Asheville is located in Buncombe County, where the three most common STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. In recent years, Buncombe County saw larger increases in chlamydia and gonorrhea infections than the state average.

Chlamydia

In 2019, North Carolina had the sixth-highest chlamydia rate of all 50 U.S. states. Its infection rate was about 22% higher than the national average but somewhat lower than neighboring South Carolina. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), nearly 84% of new diagnoses were in those aged 15 to 29.

The Asheville area has seen significant increases in chlamydia diagnoses in recent years, with Buncombe County infection rates rising about 38% between 2015 and 2019. This is 13 points higher than the 25% increase recorded statewide.

Gonorrhea

North Carolina reported a gonorrhea rate 34% higher than the national average in 2019 and had the eighth-highest gonorrhea incidence in the nation. From 2015 to 2019, diagnoses increased by 47% among women and 66% in men. The steeper increase among men may be due to more gonorrhea testing.

As with chlamydia, Buncombe County recorded significant increases in gonorrhea diagnoses between 2015 and 2019. The county’s gonorrhea rate rose by about 52% during that period, slightly higher than the 49% increase seen in the state as a whole.

Syphilis

In North Carolina, the rate of primary and secondary syphilis skyrocketed in the mid-2010s, increasing by more than 190% between 2013 and 2015. From its peak in 2015, the state’s syphilis incidence has decreased by about 10%, leaving North Carolina with the 18th-highest infection rate in the country in 2019.

Buncombe County has also reported recent decreases in syphilis diagnoses, with the rate dropping more than 14% between 2017 and 2019. Statewide, men were diagnosed about six times more often than women, and men who have sex with men made up 55% of new diagnoses.

Syphilis Rate in North Carolina, 2000-2018

With the rise of chlamydia and gonorrhea infections in the Asheville area and the ongoing threat of syphilis, it’s important for all sexually active North Carolinians to get a full-panel STD test. These STDs are often asymptomatic, so you could be unknowingly infected. Left untreated, STDs may cause infertility or other health problems. Ongoing infections also increase your risk of contracting HIV. It’s easy to get screened for STDs at one of Asheville’s many free or low-cost clinics.
