The most common STDs diagnosed in Cuyahoga County, where Cleveland Heights is located, are chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Infection rates have increased sharply over the last decade.
Chlamydia is the most common STD reported in Cuyahoga County, with an incidence rate of 883 per 100,000 people, much higher than the national average of 539.9. While this figure is close to the 2017 rate of 884.6, long-term data shows the number of chlamydia infections has been rising steadily. In 2015, the incidence of chlamydia was 721.2, which results in an increase of 22.4% over four years. The city of Cleveland reported a rate over twice as high as that of the county — 1,920.4 in 2018. Data indicates that this disease predominantly affects women, with nearly twice as many females infected as males. Of concern is the number of younger people infected, with most chlamydia diagnoses reported in the 15-24 age group.
The incidence of gonorrhea in Cuyahoga County in 2018 was 364.6 per 100,000 people. This is significantly higher than the rate of infection for the state of Ohio, which was 215.7. Again the city’s rate was double that of the county at 878.0. State data shows a sharp increase in diagnoses since 2014, when the incidence rate was 142.7. Infections are almost equally split between males and females, although more men than women are infected. The age group most at risk is young adults between 20 and 24 years old, with an infection rate of 932.1 per 100,000 people. The primary groups affected by this disease include adolescents aged 15-19, young adults from 20-24, and slightly older adults between 25-29. The rate of infections falls sharply for people aged 30 years and older.
Syphilis is usually reported by three types: latent syphilis, primary and secondary syphilis, and congenital syphilis. It’s a disease that primarily affects males, although the incidence of congenital syphilis, transmission to an unborn fetus, is rising sharply. According to the CDC, the rate of congenital syphilis in Cuyahoga County is 20.3 cases per 100,000 births. This contrasts sharply with the state rate of congenital syphilis diagnoses, which was approximately 14.5. P&S syphilis infections in Cuyahoga County showed a rate of 7.6 per 100,000 persons, slightly higher than Ohio’s figures of 6.3 but less than the nation as a whole at 10.8
STDs are on the rise, especially among sexually active young people. They can cause lifelong complications if left untreated and can affect female reproductive capabilities. STDs can also be passed on to unborn fetuses, often with fatal consequences. Unfortunately, many people don’t experience symptoms, especially in the early stages of an STD infection. The best way for sexually active people to avoid STDs is to be regularly tested.
