At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Located on the bank of the Tanana River in Alaska’s interior, Fairbanks is the state’s second-largest city, after Anchorage. In Fairbanks, the three most common STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Chlamydia

Alaska has experienced the nation’s highest rate of reported chlamydia infections every year since 2010. Its 2019 rate, at 848 cases per 100,000 people, was about 53% higher than the national average. Nearly three-quarters of these infections were in people younger than 29.

The state’s regions aren’t equally impacted by chlamydia. The Fairbanks North Star Borough, which includes the Fairbanks metro area, had the state’s seventh-highest infection rate in 2018. Regions in the state’s southwest and north were much more affected, as shown in the below chart.

Chlamydia Rates in Alaska, 2018

Gonorrhea

Alaska’s gonorrhea outbreak started in October 2017. In both 2018 and 2019, the state had the second-highest rate of infection in the country. Fortunately, the outbreak shows some signs of slowing; in 2019, the rate was 1% lower than the previous year.

Alaska’s Northern region had the greatest frequency of diagnoses in 2019, followed by Anchorage/Mat-Su and the Southwest. Rates were highest in people aged 20 to 29, although Alaskans of all ages can be affected by gonorrhea and should get tested. The youngest person diagnosed was 14 years old, while the oldest was 83.

Syphilis

Alaska’s ongoing syphilis outbreak began in early 2018 and shows no signs of abating. Between 2018 and 2019, the number of reported cases more than doubled, and 94% of cases were seen in urban areas, such as Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage.

About 60% of Alaskans diagnosed with syphilis were younger than 35, and men were diagnosed about twice as often as women. Nearly one-third of people diagnosed with syphilis in 2019 also had chlamydia or gonorrhea, which is why doctors may recommend a full-panel STD test.

With Alaska’s consistently high rate of chlamydia and its ongoing gonorrhea and syphilis outbreaks, it’s important to know your STD status. These common infections often cause no symptoms. However, left untreated, they can cause serious health complications, including infertility in women and an increased risk of contracting HIV. To protect your health, visit one of Fairbanks’ free or low-cost STD testing resources.
