Fairfax is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but it’s also the seat of Fairfax County in the state’s northern region. Chlamydia remains the most common STD in the city of Fairfax, but infection rates for chlamydia and syphilis have dropped over the past five years, while gonorrhea cases have risen.
Despite an increase in chlamydia cases on a statewide level, Fairfax city has seen a decline. Besides a slight decrease of about 9% in 2019, chlamydia cases in Fairfax have dropped by 48.5% since 2015. Fairfax County hasn’t fared as well, with case numbers spiking by about 15.5% in 2019. Chlamydia infections have risen over 48% in the county since 2015. Fairfax County accounted for more than 38.5% of all chlamydia incidences in the northern region of Virginia, and the area represented nearly 20.5% of diagnoses statewide. However, the city of Fairfax boasted the second-lowest number of cases within the region.
The number of gonorrhea cases in Virginia rose much quicker than other STDs, with nearly a 57.5% increase since 2015. Statewide, cases among men are higher than among women, with more than 56% male cases compared to about 43% female cases. Nearly 31% of gonorrhea infections in 2019 were among young adults aged 20 to 24. The northern region of the state accounted for a little over 12% of all cases in Virginia. Of these, Fairfax County made up about 35% of the region’s cases, while the city of Fairfax represented about 1%. Although the city only had 17 diagnoses in 2019, this was still more than double the number reported in 2015.
Virginia has had a 44% increase in new syphilis diagnoses over the past five years, despite a drop of over 4% in 2019. New syphilis cases include early non-primary/secondary, primary, and secondary infections, with 50.5% early infections and 49.5% primary and secondary cases. Statewide, syphilis infections among men were eight times higher than those among women, with 86.5% male cases compared to 10.75% female cases.
Adults aged 25 to 29 represented the group with the highest incidences, with nearly 23% of all cases within this age group. Fairfax County saw an 11.75% increase in syphilis diagnoses in 2019, and infections have more than doubled since 2015. The city of Fairfax had a single documented syphilis presentation in 2019, down from seven in 2018, but the city previously boasted zero cases in both 2015 and 2016.
Many STDs have no signs or symptoms, so you may have an STD and not even know it, leaving you vulnerable to potentially severe complications the longer it’s left untreated. The only way to accurately know your STD status is through testing, which is why several resources in Fairfax and the surrounding communities offer free or low-cost STD testing.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
