The three most prevalent STDs in Hamilton County in 2018 were chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The county’s gonorrhea rate per 100,000 people increased 9% between 2017 and 2018, and its primary and secondary syphilis cases more than doubled in the same time period. Unlike the state, though, the county’s chlamydia frequency dropped 4.2%.
Chlamydia cases surged 10.4% in Indiana between 2017 and 2018. While the majority of chlamydia cases statewide overwhelmingly occur among females, 2018 was the first year a slight shift in the balance between males and females was documented. Females accounted for 68.1% of Indiana’s total cases in 2018, down from the previous year’s 69%. In contrast, male numbers rose slightly during the same period, from 31% to 31.9%.
The state’s 20-24 age group continued to dominate with the highest number of cases, followed by those in the 0-19 age range.
The number of gonorrhea cases also rose statewide. While it continued to be the second-highest reported STD, its numbers likewise revealed a slight gender shift between 2017 and 2018. Females accounted for the majority of cases in 2017, with a slight edge of 50.1% compared to males’ 49.9%. In 2018, the gender percentages reversed, and males represented 50.1% of the state’s approximately 12,000 cases, while females accounted for 49.9%.
The 20-24 age group had most cases at 29.3%, followed by the 25-29 category with 22.8%.
Cases of primary and secondary syphilis in Indiana rose 17.8% between 2017 and 2018. Males accounted for a disproportionate 93.7% compared to females’ 6.3% in 2018, a trend that continued from the previous year. Indiana’s syphilis growth rate surpassed the nations’ 14.9% during the same time frame.
If you’re a sexually active adolescent or adult, it’s recommended that you seek routine testing to avoid passing an STD on to others. Regular testing also helps you avoid the potentially serious health problems that can occur if an STD is left untreated. Hamilton County and the surrounding areas offer a number of free and low-cost testing and treatment options if you’re uninsured.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
