The three most common STDs in the Independence region are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Jackson County consistently ranks higher than the state and nation for the number of STD cases per 100,000 people.
In Jackson County, there were 6,437 chlamydia infections in 2018, which corresponds with a frequency of 921 infections per 100,000 people. This is considerably higher than the respective state and national rates of 568 and 540. Data from the CDC shows that the number of infections within the county has grown in recent years, with 10% more cases being disclosed in 2018 than in 2017 and 27% more than the number reported in 2014. Statewide, this infection is diagnosed in females nearly twice as often as in males. Most cases are reported in those aged 15-29.
The frequency of gonorrhea infections in Jackson County is almost triple the national rate and twice the statewide rate at 493 infections per 100,000 residents. In 2018, the CDC disclosed 3,443 cases in the county, which is over 9% more than the number reported in 2017 and 96% more than in 2014. Males are more likely to have this infection, particularly those aged 20-24. Among this demographic, gonorrhea is disclosed at a frequency of 721 cases per 100,00 people.
In 2018, there were 806 primary and secondary syphilis cases reported in Missouri. Of these, 233 were reported in Jackson County, making this the fifth-highest county in the state for P&S syphilis diagnoses. The frequency at which this bacterial infection is documented in the county is roughly triple the state and national rates of 33 infections per 100,000 people. Of the state’s total cases, four out of every five infections were diagnosed in males. However, the number of cases in females had steadily risen over the prior few years. In 2014, there were 34 infections reported in females in the state. In 2018, there were 161 cases.
The majority of those with STDs don’t experience any symptoms, particularly when STDs are recently contracted. While many STDs are completely curable, infections only go away when treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Left untreated, STDs can cause serious problems such as arthritis, heart disease, brain damage, cancer, and infertility or sterility. Receiving regular testing and prompt treatment is the best way to monitor sexual health. The Independence region is home to several clinics and organizations that provide STD testing and treatment services at little to no cost.
The Jackson County Health Department provides various low-cost clinical services for residents of Independence, including confidential STD testing, treatment, and risk-reduction counseling. Some STDs that individuals can be tested for include bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, syphilis, herpes, gonorrhea, genital warts, and chlamydia. Services are available to those aged 13 and over. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. To verify eligibility and schedule an appointment, individuals should call the clinic. In addition to STD testing, the department provides clinical services such as immunizations, CPR and First Aid training, pregnancy testing, and cancer screenings.
