Keller is a suburban city in Tarrant County and part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Among counties and independent cities nationwide, Tarrant County ranked 29th in 2018 for its number of reported chlamydia cases, 37th for gonorrhea, and 24th for primary and secondary syphilis.
Tarrant County accounted for about 6.5% of the total chlamydia cases reported in Texas in 2018. Diagnoses in the county increased more than 14% in 2018 compared to 2017. The overall increase since 2011 was approximately 20%. Compared to other Texas counties, Tarrant experienced a lower-than-average increase over the seven years, partially due to a drop in cases in 2014 and 2017. However, of the 254 counties in Texas, Tarrant ranked fourth for the number of chlamydia cases at the end of 2018.
In 2018, Tarrant County represented nearly 7% of the state’s total gonorrhea diagnoses. Reported gonorrhea infections were up by more than 16% in 2018 compared to 2017. The county recorded a drop of more than 10% in gonorrhea cases in 2017 and another drop of about 2.5% in 2012. But it still reported an overall increase of nearly 45% between 2011 and 2018. Tarrant ranked as the fifth-highest county in 2018 for total gonorrhea cases.
In 2018, syphilis infections in all stages jumped by more than 15% in Tarrant County and represented about 6% of Texas’ total syphilis diagnoses for the year. Since 2011, the county has recorded an increase of more than 117% in syphilis diagnoses. Reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis, the most infectious stage of the STD, were up by more than 46% in Tarrant in 2018, with an overall increase of about 129% since 2011. Tarrant County contributed over 11% to the state’s total primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses in 2018. Its primary and secondary syphilis infection rate brought the county to 12th statewide compared to other Texas counties, and its case numbers ranked it third.
If you’re sexually active, it’s important to get STD testing regularly. Many STD infections have no symptoms at all, especially at the onset. Untreated STDs can have serious and sometimes life-threatening consequences. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can be cured with antibiotics, so take advantage of the free or low-cost STD testing offered at clinics in Keller and nearby communities.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
