Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.
You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.
At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.
Las Cruces is the second-largest city in New Mexico and the seat of Dona Ana County, where the three most dominant STDs have had mixed results. Dona Ana saw chlamydia infections drop and gonorrhea cases rise in 2018, but syphilis diagnoses spiked dramatically.
Chlamydia rates in New Mexico consistently ranked higher than national rates between 2011 and 2017, and the state experienced a 3.6% increase in chlamydia cases in 2018. The incidence rate among females was twice that of males in 2018, and chlamydia predominantly affected young adults aged 20 to 24, followed by adolescents aged 15 to 19. In Dona Ana County, chlamydia infections grew by more than 2.5% in 2017, only to drop nearly 1.5% in 2018.
New Mexico’s gonorrhea rates continue to exhibit significant increases, including a 28% increase in 2017 followed by an additional 17% increase in 2018. While the incidence rate was slightly higher in men, the ages affected varied between the two sexes. In 2018, rates decreased by 13% among adolescent females aged 15 to 19 but increased by about 33% among women aged 30 to 34. Alternately, rates among young men aged 20 to 24 increased by more than 15% and increased by more than 27% among men aged 25 to 29. Dona Ana saw gonorrhea cases nearly double in just five years, with a 98% increase between 2013 and 2018.
Rates of primary and secondary syphilis in New Mexico have increased exponentially in recent years, including dramatic increases of 61% in 2016 and 58% in 2018. The statewide rate of P&S syphilis infections among males is five times higher than among females. However, females aged 30 to 34 saw a significant increase of 506% in P&S syphilis rates in 2018, while females aged 35 to 39 saw a 1,620% increase. Of the 33 counties in New Mexico, Dona Ana had the second-highest number of P&S syphilis infections in 2017 behind Bernalillo County, while 12 counties recorded zero diagnoses. Dona Ana County recorded 36 P&S syphilis infections in 2018, when just 10 years prior, in 2008, it had zero.
STDs can remain in your body for a long time without showing any symptoms. Untreated STDs may cause fertility issues, especially in females, and other serious health problems for both sexes. You can pass an undiagnosed STD to your partner(s), even if you don’t have symptoms. Get tested at one of the free or low-cost STD clinics located throughout Las Cruces to protect yourself and others.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
