At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Learn More About At-Home STD Testing

From 2017 to 2018, gonorrhea and syphilis cases experienced a slight drop in Horry County. In 2017, there were about 1,000 gonorrhea infections and roughly 30 syphilis infections disclosed by the CDC. In 2018, a little over 700 people were diagnosed with gonorrhea and about 20 with syphilis. The number of chlamydia infections stayed roughly the same during this time frame.

Chlamydia

In 2018, there were over 30,000 chlamydia cases in South Carolina. Of these, about seven in 10 were documented in those aged 15-24, and women were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed. Overall, this disease was documented in almost 700 out of 100,000 people statewide. In Horry County, it occurred at a lower rate of about 600. While this was lower than the state rate, it was higher than the national frequency of about 500.

Gonorrhea

In 2018, gonorrhea was the second-most prevalent STD nationwide and was diagnosed at a frequency of about 200 incidences per 100,000 people. In South Carolina, the rate was considerably higher at 300, but in Horry County, the number of occurrences was closer to the national average. Among those aged 20-24, about 1,300 out of 100,000 people had gonorrhea, making this age group the most likely to be diagnosed with this infection. The frequency was roughly the same for males and females in the county, although it was slightly higher among males.

Syphilis

There were almost 400 reports of primary and secondary syphilis in South Carolina in 2018, which is a 70% increase over the number disclosed in 2012. Almost all of these cases were reported in males, who were five times more likely than females to contract this disease. In Horry County, this disease was documented at a frequency of about 10 incidences per 100,000 people. This was roughly on par with the state and national averages.

While some individuals experience pain and discomfort when infected with an STD, the majority of people have no noticeable symptoms. Unfortunately, even if you don’t have symptoms, an STD can cause serious health issues such as infertility, nerve damage, cardiovascular problems, and a higher susceptibility for HIV. The most effective way to efficiently diagnose and treat STDs and prevent them from spreading is through regular testing. Fortunately, there are several locations in the Myrtle Beach area where you can get free or low-cost testing and treatment.
