At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Ormond Beach, north of Daytona Beach, is in Volusia County, where chlamydia cases dropped for the second year in a row, but it remains the most common STD reported. Gonorrhea cases fell for the second consecutive year, but total syphilis cases and primary and secondary syphilis infections increased two years running, following a dive in 2017.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia cases in Volusia County went down about 2% in 2019 after dropping a little over 1.5% in 2018. Due to several ups and downs, chlamydia cases were higher in the county 10 years back than five years ago and reported infections have been significantly higher in women than men. Chlamydia infections have increased among men every year since 2014, including a nearly 2% increase in 2019, while women saw a drop of almost 4% in 2019 and almost 3% in 2018. Overall, chlamydia infections among men have risen over 79% since 2014, with female cases only going up about 32%. The 20 to 24 age group had the highest incidence of infection in 2019, accounting for about 37% of all cases.

Chlamydia Cases in Volusia County, 2006-2019

Gonorrhea

Volusia County saw a drop of about 4.5% in gonorrhea infections in 2019 after a 15% decrease in 2018. However, cases have risen by nearly 82% overall between 2014 and 2019. Gonorrhea infections among men have been higher than among women since 2014. Despite a decline in documented infections in both sexes two years in a row, male cases almost doubled between 2014 and 2019, while female cases grew by about 64%. The highest incidence of gonorrhea infections in 2019 occurred in the 20 to 24 age group, which made up about 30% of all cases, with the 25 to 29 age group coming in second with slightly over 20%.

Syphilis

Syphilis infections in all stages increased over 50% in 2019 after rising by more than 23% in 2018. Since 2014, reported syphilis cases have increased more than 206%, including more than 283% in primary and secondary syphilis cases alone. Syphilis infections in the male population have dominated those among women, but female cases are increasing faster. In 2019, syphilis infections in men climbed about 19%, but female cases rose by nearly 237%. That year, men accounted for almost 68% of cases, and women represented about 32%. In 2018, men made up nearly 87% of all cases, while women only accounted for about 14%, which shows a significant shift in the ratios between the sexes in a single year. Volusia County had five congenital syphilis cases in 2019, when it only had one just two years ago.

Many STDs are curable with antibiotics, and others can be managed with appropriate treatment. Left untreated, they can cause serious long-term health issues, such as infertility, organ damage, and even death. STD infections leave you at a greater risk of contracting the AIDS virus. STDs often don’t have any symptoms, so it’s important to learn your STD status by taking advantage of one of the free or low-cost STD testing resources in communities serving Ormond Beach residents.
