Gonorrhea

Volusia County saw a drop of about 4.5% in gonorrhea infections in 2019 after a 15% decrease in 2018. However, cases have risen by nearly 82% overall between 2014 and 2019. Gonorrhea infections among men have been higher than among women since 2014. Despite a decline in documented infections in both sexes two years in a row, male cases almost doubled between 2014 and 2019, while female cases grew by about 64%. The highest incidence of gonorrhea infections in 2019 occurred in the 20 to 24 age group, which made up about 30% of all cases, with the 25 to 29 age group coming in second with slightly over 20%.

Syphilis

Syphilis infections in all stages increased over 50% in 2019 after rising by more than 23% in 2018. Since 2014, reported syphilis cases have increased more than 206%, including more than 283% in primary and secondary syphilis cases alone. Syphilis infections in the male population have dominated those among women, but female cases are increasing faster. In 2019, syphilis infections in men climbed about 19%, but female cases rose by nearly 237%. That year, men accounted for almost 68% of cases, and women represented about 32%. In 2018, men made up nearly 87% of all cases, while women only accounted for about 14%, which shows a significant shift in the ratios between the sexes in a single year. Volusia County had five congenital syphilis cases in 2019, when it only had one just two years ago.
