The most commonly reported STDs in Pocatello, the fifth-largest city in Idaho and the seat for Bannock County, are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Chlamydia and gonorrhea mainly affect people in their early 20s, while syphilis tends to involve a slightly older age group.

Chlamydia

The incidence of chlamydia in Bannock County, as reported by the CDC in 2018, was 355.3 per 100,000 people, which is slightly below the Idaho rate of 382.8. The number of infections per 100,000 is steadily increasing year-on-year. Over the last decade, the annual increase was approximately 4.2% per annum. CDC data shows that adolescents and young adults aged 15 and older are most susceptible to infection. The rate of infection drops sharply once people reach their 30s, possibly indicating that as people get older, their sexual practices change. Nearly twice as many females are infected as men. Risks of untreated chlamydia in females include difficulties conceiving and infant infection during delivery.

Gonorrhea

According to figures from the CDC, the second most common STD in Bannock County is gonorrhea. The Bannock rate of infection in 2018 was 96.2 per 100,000 people, which is significantly higher than the Idaho rate of 66 for the same year. Of particular concern is the steep rise in infections since 2013, where the number of diagnoses has increased by a factor of five. This particular sexually transmitted bacterial infection affects males and females almost equally. It’s most prevalent among young adults in their 20s, peaking with those aged 20-24 and falling at a steady rate in older age groups.

Syphilis

While the incidence of syphilis in Idaho is considerably lower than the other two STDs, infections are increasing at an alarming rate. According to information from the CDC, the number of early or latent infections have increased by a factor of four over the last five years. It’s important to recognize that initial infections are relatively painless and asymptomatic. Therefore, the real incidence may be significantly higher. The CDC reports that in 2018, the frequency of early or latent infections in Idaho was 1.9 per 100,000 people and that of primary and secondary syphilis was 2.7.

Some STDs have limited or no symptoms. Because of this, it’s easy for infected persons to transmit the disease to their partners without even realizing it. STD infections can cause infertility, organ damage and even death if left untreated. Anyone who is sexually active should get tested annually or more often, depending on their sexual practices. Thankfully, there are several low and no-cost clinics in and around Pocatello that provide STD screening.
