Rockwall is the seat of Rockwall County, the smallest county by size of all 254 Texas counties, and it’s part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. While chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most reported STDs in Rockwall, case numbers for both rose much more slowly than those of syphilis, the third-most reported STD.

Chlamydia

Across Texas, chlamydia infections among women were more than twice as high as those among men in 2018. Adolescents/young adults aged 15 to 24 were the group with the highest incidence of infection, representing nearly 64% of all cases statewide. In Rockwall County, chlamydia infections were slightly lower in 2018 compared to the previous year. However, since 2011, the county has had an increase of about 39% in chlamydia cases overall.

Gonorrhea

Before 2014, gonorrhea infections were more prevalent in women than men in Texas, but the number of male cases has been higher every year since. This included 2018 when gonorrhea infections reported in males accounted for more than 57% of all cases, and those among females represented slightly over 42%. Rockwall County had only 0.10% of the state’s gonorrhea cases in 2018. Although the county’s case numbers were down from 2017, it represented an increase of about 77% compared to 2011.

Syphilis

Syphilis cases in all stages were three times more prevalent in men than women in 2018, with males representing more than 77% of the statewide total. Separating primary and secondary syphilis infections, cases among men were five times higher than those among women, with males comprising more than 83% of the statewide total. Rockwall County, like Texas overall, saw a much higher increase in syphilis infections compared to chlamydia and gonorrhea. Although the county reported less than 20 syphilis cases in all stages, this represented a 260% increase from the five reported in 2011. Less than a quarter of these cases were primary and secondary syphilis infections, but this still amounted to a 400% increase compared to 2011 when there weren’t any cases reported.

Syphilis Cases and Rates, 2011-2018

STD testing is one of the most important things you can do for your overall sexual health because left undetected and untreated, STDs can cause infertility, organ damage, and even death. It’s easy to pass along an infection since many STDs are asymptomatic. If you’re sexually active, learn your STD status to protect yourself and your sexual partners by getting tested at one of the low-cost facilities in Rockwall or nearby communities.
