Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.
You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.
At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.
Whittier is in Los Angeles County and is located about 12 miles southeast of the City of Los Angeles. In 2018, chlamydia was the most commonly reported STD, accounting for 66% of Los Angeles County’s total number of combined STD cases, which was followed by 26% in gonorrhea diagnoses and 8% in syphilis infections.
Compared to the top 70 counties and independent cities with the greatest number of reported chlamydia cases, LA County ranked first in 2018 and again in 2019. Diagnoses of chlamydia in the county have gone up every year for at least the last five years, including an increase of nearly 6% in 2018 and an increase of about 2.5% in 2019. Chlamydia continued to be more prevalent in females than males and was reported most among youth and younger adults aged 15 to 29 in 2018.
LA County also ranked first among the top counties and independent cities with the most gonorrhea cases in 2018 and 2019. Gonorrhea diagnoses saw increases for the past several years, including a climb of nearly 5% in 2018, but the county had a dip of more than 4% in 2019. Gonorrhea infections have historically been more prevalent in men than women in LA County. In 2018, gonorrhea diagnoses were 2.5 times higher among males than among females. Rates were highest among males aged 25 to 29, while females rates were highest in the 20 to 24 age group.
In 2018, early syphilis diagnoses among males occurred at more than 10 times the rate of those among females. Early syphilis includes the infectious primary and secondary stages of the STD. Despite the much greater prevalence among men, rates increased by 50% in females between 2017 and 2018, while the increase in early syphilis rates among men was just 14%. P&S syphilis diagnoses jumped 18.5% between 2017 and 2018. LA County also had the highest number of congenital syphilis cases ever reported in 2018. Congenital syphilis infections increased over 36% in 2018, but since 2010, the number of cases increased by more than 800%.
Did you know that many STDs have little or no symptoms? Untreated STDs can cause infertility, cancer, blindness, organ damage, and even death, which is why it’s so important to get tested and treated if necessary. Getting tested is the only way to know for sure if you have an STD, so visit one of the medical facilities offering free or low-cost STD testing in Whittier and surrounding communities.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
