Descriptions of two different metanephrine tests are available:

  • Plasma Free Metanephrines: This test is used to help diagnose or rule out rare tumors of the adrenal gland called pheochromocytomas and rare tumors outside the adrenal glands called paragangliomas and is performed on a blood sample.
  • Urine Metanephrines: This test also helps in the diagnosis or ruling out of a pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma and is performed on a 24-hour urine sample.
