At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Bellingham is the seat of and most populous city in Whatcom County. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the top two most reported STDs in Whatcom County. Most states and counties list syphilis as the third most reported STD, but in Whatcom and Washington state, herpes is third and syphilis fourth.

Chlamydia

Young women aged 15 to 24 have the highest rates of chlamydia in Washington, which is likely partially due to better screening among females of childbearing age. Since 2010, rates of chlamydia diagnoses in Washington have increased 56%, which includes an increase of 7% in cases recorded in 2018. Chlamydia infections in Whatcom County in 2018 made up less than 2.5% of the state’s total, despite a rather significant spike of more than 18% compared to 2017. Although the county reported a drop of over 9.5% in 2016, Whatcom documented an overall increase of 46.5% between 2014 and 2018.

Chlamydia Case Counts and Rates in Whatcom County, 2014-2018

Gonorrhea

Males in Washington have a higher rate of gonorrhea than females in most age groups, with recorded infections the highest among men aged 25 to 34. Gonorrhea diagnoses in the state have increased every year since 2012 and were 23% higher in 2018 compared to 2017. Whatcom County accounted for just 1.5% of Washington’s total gonorrhea cases in 2018, but the county has seen relatively large increases in infections over the last three years. While the jump of about 16% in 2018 was comparatively smaller, the increase in 2017 was over 44% and in 2016 it was more than 67%. Overall, the county has seen gonorrhea diagnoses rise nearly 195% between 2014 and 2018.

Herpes/Syphilis

Information on herpes is typically limited because it isn’t a nationally notifiable STD, but Washington tracks herpes cases, which have always been higher than syphilis cases. In 2018, herpes diagnoses were almost twice as high as primary and secondary syphilis (P&S) infections in the state, and Whatcom County represented almost 4% of this total. Of the P&S syphilis cases recorded, Whatcom County cases made up about 1% of the state’s total. Men have a much higher prevalence of P&S syphilis in the state, especially those between the ages of 25 and 34.

Many people with STDs experience only minor discomfort or no symptoms, and therefore, don’t seek STD testing or treatment. Untreated STDs can lead to serious health problems, including infertility and organ failure, so protect yourself and your partner(s) by getting tested. You’ll find plenty of free or low-cost STD testing available at facilities throughout Bellingham.
