Leesburg, VA, which lies 30 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., is located in Loudoun County and included in Virginia’s Loudoun Health District and the state’s Northern Region for reporting. The area has seen gradual rises in chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis since 2014, with a recent drop in early syphilis diagnoses in 2018.

Chlamydia

Yearly increases of chlamydia diagnoses have resulted in Loudoun County’s rate of 235.9 per 100,000 persons. Although much higher than the beginning rate of 164.4 in 2014, the county resides near the bottom of Virginia’s ranking by health district. Of the 8,693 chlamydia diagnoses in Virginia’s Northern Region, 5,279 were reported in females, over 60%. Adults aged 20-24 have the most likelihood of contracting chlamydia, with those in the 15-19 and 25-29 age groups also at risk.

Chlamydia Diagnoses by Region, 2018

Gonorrhea

Loudoun County has shown a slow but gradual rise in gonorrhea cases since 2014, starting with a rate of 16.3 per 100,000 persons and ending with 30.04, an 84% increase. However, this is significantly lower than other counties, notably Petersburg County, at 696.1. Across the state, the disease affects males slightly more than females, and gonorrhea infections are concentrated in those aged 20 to 24. The Northern Region shows a large discrepancy between males and females, with males reporting over 70% of the region’s 1,536 diagnoses.

Syphilis

Early syphilis diagnoses fell slightly in Loudon County for the first time since 2014, dropping from a rate of 7.5 per 100,000 persons in 2017 to 6.5 in 2018, much lower than the state’s 2018 overall rate of 15.6. In all areas of the state, early syphilis diagnoses occur overwhelmingly in men, with the Northern Region reporting 324 males versus 18 females and two transgenders. Twenty- to forty-year-old adults are most affected by the disease, accounting for 212 of the Northern Region’s 344 diagnoses.

Early Syphilis Diagnoses by Age Group, 2018

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all sexually active women and gay and bisexual men should receive screening for STDs annually and even more frequently, dependent upon lifestyle choices. Most STDs are easily treatable, but they can remain undetected within the body and, over the years, cause serious health complications. Fortunately, residents of Leesburg, VA, can obtain free or low-cost STD testing through various local clinics and health centers.
