In 2017, there were roughly 16,260 reported chlamydial infections in Nevada for an overall rate of 544.7 cases per 100,000 residents. About 75% of all cases in the state were reported in Clark County, where the rate was 543.2, a 3.6% increase from 2016. The rate of reported chlamydia among women was nearly double that among men. Over 96% of cases in women were among those aged 15-44 years, compared to 93% of reported cases among men in the same age bracket.
From 2016 to 2017, the rate of reported gonorrhea in Nevada increased by 26% and in Clark County by about 23%. Once again, Clark County led the state in reported cases, with the county accounting for over 80% of all reported cases in Nevada. In 2017, as in previous years, the rates of reported gonorrhea were highest among adolescents and young adults, with nearly 90% of cases diagnosed in people aged 15-44 years. This infection is most prevalent in females ages 20-24 and in males ages 25-29.
In 2017, there were a total of 587 cases of primary and secondary syphilis in Nevada for a rate of 19.7 cases per 100,000 Nevadans. Over 88% of these cases occurred in Clark County, where there were 519 reported cases for a rate of 23.7. This is a 218% increase over the number of cases reported in 2013. Males are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with syphilis than females; of the cases reported in Clark County in 2017, 464 were diagnosed in males and 55 in females.
Not all STDs have symptoms; for example, most women who have chlamydia don’t experience symptoms. And this is also true for half of women and one in 10 men with gonorrhea. Many STDs can lie dormant for months or even years. However, whether STDs are symptomatic or not, they can cause serious long-term problems like infertility, infections in other organs, cirrhosis, certain types of cancer, and even early death. For Las Vegas residents who are sexually active, regular, reliable screening is an essential part of routine health care.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation is a global non-profit organization that provides a full range of STD prevention, testing, and treatment services. It features two Las Vegas locations, both of which provide confidential, affordable STD screening and cryotherapy treatments. This is a walk-in clinic, and clients are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. In most cases, testing takes about 30 minutes, and results are available within a few days or a few weeks, depending on the type of test. Clients with positive results are contacted by phone. Hours of operation vary by location.
