Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.
You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.
At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.
Amarillo is the seat of Potter County in the Texas panhandle, but it’s partly located in Randall county. Amarillo ranked 11th in the top 50 cities in Texas for the highest number of combined STD cases in 2018, which included chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
Amarillo had a relatively small number of chlamydia cases in 2018 that only comprised about 1% of the state’s total. Because Amarillo is spread between two counties, the number of chlamydia cases the city contributed to each of the counties’ totals isn’t available. However, it lies primarily within Potter County, which saw chlamydia infections jump by more than 13% in 2018. Potter County’s reported chlamydia cases reached a high of over 1,200 in 2013, which resulted in an infection rate of more than 1% per 100,000 residents. The county saw infections drop from 2014 through 2016, only to have positive diagnoses climb again in 2017 and 2018.
Gonorrhea cases in Amarillo accounted for less than 2% of the state’s total in 2018, but Potter County has seen a disturbing rise in this STD. The county recorded nearly a 28% spike in gonorrhea infections in 2018, which followed a rise of more than 5% in 2017. The increase in 2018 marked the largest jump in cases since 2012 when gonorrhea diagnoses soared by nearly 54%. Overall, between 2011 and 2018, gonorrhea cases in Potter County have more than doubled.
Despite Amarillo being ranked 11th statewide for the highest combined STD cases, 19 other Texas cities had higher numbers of primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses. The city represented only about 0.5% of the state’s total. Potter County has seen a distinct decline in P&S syphilis cases in recent years. Following a drop of nearly 31% in 2018 and almost a 41% decrease in 2017, the county’s reported P&S syphilis infections in 2018 matched the number recorded in 2015. However, the county had zero P&S syphilis diagnoses a scant seven years ago in 2011.
STDs don’t always have symptoms, making it difficult for you to know you’ve been infected and are passing the infection to your partner(s). The longer you have an STD, the more you put yourself at risk for long-term health problems. Take advantage of free or low-cost STD testing offered by facilities in Amarillo and nearby communities to ensure you’re STD-free.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
