At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Hialeah is a city in Miami-Dade County and a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area. In 2019, Miami-Dade saw all three most reported STDs increase countywide, which includes chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Chlamydia

Of the top 70 counties ranked nationwide by the number of reported STD cases in 2019, Miami-Dade placed 13th for chlamydia, up from 15th in 2018. The county’s chlamydia diagnoses increased by more than 10% in 2019 and have increased over 77.5% compared to a decade ago. Despite being the largest county in Florida by population, Miami-Dade comprised a relatively low 13% of the state’s chlamydia cases in 2019. Infections in women remain slightly higher than in men. However, the infection rate among men in 2019 was significantly higher than the state’s average and has been since 2013. Comparatively, the infection rate among women was significantly lower and has been for over a decade.

Gonorrhea

Miami-Dade County ranked 16th nationwide for its number of gonorrhea cases in 2019, up from 19th in 2018. The county reported an increase of more than 16.5% in gonorrhea infections in 2019 and diagnoses have more than doubled compared to 10 years ago. Gonorrhea was three times more prevalent among men than women in 2019, marking the greatest reported gap between the sexes. The 20 to 24 age group had the highest incidence of gonorrhea infection in 2019, accounting for nearly 23% of the county’s total, but the 25 to 29 age group comprised about 21% of the total. Miami-Dade made up about 13.5% of Florida’s total gonorrhea cases in 2019.

Syphilis

Infectious syphilis cases, which include primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses, continue to rise countywide. Unlike the state, Miami-Dade’s national ranking rose in 2019, going from ninth in 2018 to sixth place for its number of syphilis diagnoses in 2019. Reported P&S syphilis infections in 2019 rose nearly 8% in Miami-Dade, which accounted for more than 18% of the state’s total. Over the past decade, P&S syphilis cases have increased nearly 88% countywide. Cases among men have historically been significantly higher than women, including in 2019 when syphilis infections in males were eight times more prevalent than in females.

Many people with STDs don’t have any symptoms, but they’re still very contagious and expose you to an infection that can have severe health consequences. Know your STD status to ensure you receive treatment before potentially irreversible harm comes to your body. Schedule STD testing regularly with one of the many clinics you’ll find in Hialeah and other nearby communities.
