At-Home STD Testing

Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.

You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.

At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.

Anaheim is the largest city in Orange County and part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Data from the Orange County Health Improvement Partnership, Healthier Together, shows the STD infection rate in Orange County is slightly lower than in California as a whole. Unfortunately, STD cases are increasing. Chlamydia is the most common STD in the county, followed by gonorrhea and syphilis.

Chlamydia

In Orange Country, the incidence of chlamydia in 2018 was 444 cases per 100,000 people. Over the nine years between 2009 and 2018, Orange County cases doubled. What’s concerning is that CDC data for California shows that in 2018, chlamydia infections among sexually active young people aged 19 to 25 were almost five times higher than the overall incidence of chlamydia in the state. In Anaheim, the disease infects women more than men in a 3:2 ratio.

Gonorrhea

Between 2011 and 2018, gonorrhea cases in Orange County increased nearly fourfold. During this period, the annual rate of increase of gonorrhea exceeded 20%. In Orange County, Gonorrhea infects twice as many men as women. Sexually active people in Orange County between the ages of 19 and 35 are three times more likely to be infected with gonorrhea than the average population.

Syphilis

Syphilis diagnoses in Orange County increased tenfold from 2.2 cases per 100,000 in 2011 to 24 per 100,000 in 2018. In Orange County, males are eleven times more likely to be infected than females. The disease mostly affects adults aged 19 and 45, with infections peaking in the 26 to 35 age group.  According to CDC data for California, between 2012 and 2018, the rate of congenital syphilis infections,  where pregnant mothers pass syphilis onto their unborn child, increased by a factor of five.

If you’re sexually active, your risk of contracting STDs is high. Many STDs cause minor symptoms which often disappear with time even though the disease is still active. Untreated STDs may cause serious health issues, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ectopic pregnancies in women, serious organ damage, and even death. Having an STD also increases your risk of HIV infection. Fortunately, most STDs are easily treated with antibiotics, but it’s not easy to know if you’re infected without being tested.
