Testing for STDs at home is safe, convenient, and private. Performed regularly, it can help you stay healthy and avoid unknowingly transmitting STDs.
You have many options for at-home STD testing. The best at-home STD tests are FDA approved and evaluated for safety and accuracy with fast result turnaround times and support from health care professionals.
At-home STD testing kits should include instructions for collection and test registration, along with materials such as containers and swabs to collect and send your sample to the lab. Most at-home STD tests offer results in about five days through a secure online patient portal.
Oxnard is the most populous city in Ventura County on California’s southern coast. Between 2014 and 2018, Ventura County has seen chlamydia cases steadily rise, gonorrhea diagnoses nearly double, and syphilis infections more than double.
Chlamydia cases in Ventura County have gone up every year between 2014 and 2018, except in 2016 when cases dropped about 4%. However, reported infections more than bounced back in 2017, increasing by over 9.5%. Diagnoses inched up another 6% in 2018, but Ventura County still only made up less than 1.5% of California’s total chlamydia cases that year. Chlamydia infections in Ventura County have historically been higher among women than men, including in 2018 when female cases outnumbered male cases by more than two to one. Young females aged 15 to 24 remain the group with the highest infection rate, accounting for nearly 42% of Ventura County’s total chlamydia diagnoses in 2018.
Ventura County’s reported gonorrhea infections in 2018 dropped about 3% while California saw an overall increase of 5.5%. The decline in 2018 was a welcome reprieve after the county recorded a significant surge of over 70% in gonorrhea infections in 2015 and a smaller spike of 16.5% in 2017. Gonorrhea in men has historically been slightly higher than in women, with male cases representing about 59% of the county’s total in both 2017 and 2018. Gonorrhea case numbers among adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 in 2018 were nearly identical in both sexes. When combined, male and female cases in this age group accounted for 35.5% of Ventura County’s total gonorrhea diagnoses in 2018.
Syphilis infections in Ventura County have spiked in the last couple of years and most of these cases were in men. Early non-primary non-secondary syphilis diagnoses in Ventura County nearly tripled in just two years after skyrocketing nearly 91% in 2017 and jumping another 40.5% in 2018. Stats were similar for primary and secondary syphilis infections, which increased about 57.5% in 2017 and again in 2018. Of the P&S syphilis cases in 2018, only five were reported in women, leaving 94% of infections among men. Between 2014 and 2018, male cases of P&S syphilis have risen over 60%.
Any sexually active person can have an STD without even knowing it. Without timely treatment, it can lead to serious health issues, including infertility, organ damage, blindness, and death. STD testing is the only way to know with certainty whether you have an infection. Thankfully, several clinics in Oxnard and nearby Ventura provide testing for free or at a low cost.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of the most critical public health challenges facing the United States, with approximately 26 million new STD infections occurring every year. Nearly half of these new infections affect young people ages 15 to 24.
Community-based organizations are a vital first line of defense in the fight against STDs and HIV/AIDS in particular. They generate awareness and foster social change while providing access to testing and treatment.
